German Program Academic Collaboration

Department of Western Languages, HUSO KKU Establishes Partnership with Faculty of Humanities, University of Hamburg

From 26 to 31 May 2026, Assistant Professor Wassamill Watcharakaweesilp, Chair of the German Major Program Committee, attended Thai-Tag, organized by the Department of Asia-Africa Studies, University of Hamburg, Germany. The opening ceremony was graced by Ms. Chompoonute Chompookam, Senior Diplomat at the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin, and Mr. Stefan Krohn, Honorary Consul of the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Hamburg, both of whom delivered opening remarks.

The event aimed to provide opportunities for academics and German students to attend academic lectures, to present academic work, to share internship experience, to participate in a photography contest in Thailand, and to exchange perspectives and deepen their understanding across various aspects of Thailand.

Internship Insights and Cultural Exchange

The highlight of the event was the presentations delivered by German students from universities across Germany who had internships in Thailand and returned to Germany to share their experiences and perspectives on Thailand’s economy, society, and culture. The session was creative and highly beneficial, attended by the Senior Diplomat from the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin and the Honorary Consul from the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Hamburg, together with esteemed lecturers and experts, listened to the students’ presentations and acknowledged the insights shared during the event.

Collaborative Support

Contributions of Thai Exchange Networks

This event was organized with support and collaboration from many Thai Exchange students including Thai military scholarship students in Germany, as well as students from the German Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University, who had been awarded exchange scholarships to the University of Hamburg. In this event, students assisted with venue arrangements and provided support for guests in various aspects.

Furthermore, the Thai Music Society, established by Thai residents in Hamburg, performed traditional Thai Instrumental music for the participants. The Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin also organized an exhibition on traditional Thai attire to promote a better understanding of Thai clothing and culture.

Future Milestone

Strategic Institutional MoUs

At the event, Mr. Stefan Krohn, Honorary Consul of the Royal Thai Honorary Consulate in Hamburg, mentioned that he had previously travelled to Khon Kaen Province to award scholarships to Khon Kaen University students as Chairperson of Krohn-Stiftung.

In addition, Assistant Professor Wassamill Watcharakaweesilp met with Professor Dr. Volker Grabowsky, Senior Professor at the Department of Asia-Africa Studies, University of Hamburg, to discuss the possibility of sending Khon Kaen University students to Germany for cooperative education placements as well as the preparation of an MoU between the two universities. Professor Dr. Grabowsky expressed his support for the collaboration and his willingness to consider the relevant documents, which may lead to the signing of an MoU between Khon Kaen University and the University of Hamburg, Germany, in the near future.
