2. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM
 

The Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology program (Revised in 2021) aims to produce graduates with the following qualifications:

(1) Having deep knowledge of theory and methodology in Sociology and being able to analyze and synthesize social problems and changes related to social dynamics in Thailand and the Global community
(2) Having the ability to develop and disseminate sociological knowledge to use it as a base for policy formulation and development strategies of community organizations at both local and national levels
(3) Having the ability to analyze social and cultural changes resulting from social movements and globalization and being aware of the importance of multiculturalism
(4) Having the ability to apply knowledge in communication and information technology in sociological research effectively
(5) Having morality and ethics, including consciousness about self-responsibility and society, and creativity and initiative for people development to sustainably live together

3. CURRICULUM

Total credit of study: Type 1.1 = 48 credits, Type 2.1 = 75 credits, Type 2.2 = 93 credits

This program is a Regular Program. The classes are taught on Mondays - Fridays.

Type 1.1 = Research based

 

Type 1.1 students who have completed a Master’s degree in Sociology for more than three years are required to take a non-credit preparatory course (3 credits) HS477104 and another additional non-credit course under the approval of the Program Administration Committee.

Thesis and Dissertation Courses

The thesis course aims for students to research and apply various disciplines to analyze, synthesize, and perform sociology knowledge according to the standard criteria for graduate programs of the university. Type 2.1 and Type 2.2 students are required to take the following thesis course and complete it only in Thai and English.

The dissertation aims for students to research and have competence to apply various disciplines to analyze, synthesize, and perform new knowledge in sociology according to the standard criteria for graduate programs of the university. Type 1.1, 2.1, and 2.2 students are required to take one of the following dissertation courses and complete it only in Thai and English.

Note: For type 1.1 students who hold a Master’s degree in Sociology for more than 3 years, the Program Administration Committee may require students to take a non-credit Preparatory course HS 477 104 (3 credits) together with type 2.1 and 2.2 students. According to the study plan, type 1.1 students are required to take a Qualifying Examination (QE) to evaluate that they are competent to conduct a research and are qualified and eligible to propose for approval of a Dissertation outline within the second semester in the first year.

For Type 2.1 students

After finishing the second semester in the second year of study, students have to pass the master’s degree thesis examination and publish an academic paper for graduation according to Khon Kaen University regulations (No. 1259/2017) on Thesis Paper Publication or Independence Study for Graduation or the later revised rule. In addition, the students must state their intention in writing to continue to study for a doctoral degree according to the study plan under the approval of the Program Administration Committee. Furthermore, the qualified applicants should have

  1. a cumulative GPA of 3.25,
  2. a Master’s degree thesis quality,
  3. an academic transcript,
  4. a proper duration of conducting the master’s degree thesis, and
  5. other related factors.

 

If the applicants do not meet the requirements for pursuing a doctoral degree, the cumulative GPA is less than 3.25; the students will only receive a Master of Arts in Sociology degree.

 

In addition, type 2.1 and 2.2 students who wish to study for the doctoral degree must have a thesis progress assessment result of at least 50% of the total credit from the enrolled thesis course each semester.

 

For Type 2.2 Students
