KKU’s HUSO and Social Development joins a workshop to discuss a way to support vulnerable groups in disaster

On 30 March, 2025, The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University, Led by Associate Professor Dr. Wipawee Grisanaputi, Assistant Dean for Research and Services, participated in a workshop for the Disaster Care Center for the Vulnerable (DCCV). The workshop focused on disaster care for vulnerable groups in the northeastern region of Thailand. The event was organized by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), with the Honorable Mr. Warawut Silpa-archa, Minister of MSDHS, presiding over the meeting. Attendees included provincial officials, heads of government departments, representatives from public and private organizations, and local government organizations, who gathered to discuss effective ways to assist vulnerable groups affected by disasters. The meeting took place at the Avani Khon Kaen Hotel, Khon Kaen Province.

In this workshop, Khon Kaen University, represented by Professor Dr. Thidarat Boonmas, Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Societal Sustainability, played a key role in presenting information and strategies for developing a system to care for vulnerable groups. Specifically, the focus was on the role of promoting the empowerment of women and families in the northeastern region, along with advancing research, academic services, and innovation to enhance and improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups.

Khon Kaen University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also plays a crucial role in driving policies that promote and develop the potential of vulnerable groups within the university. This is done through the establishment of academic service centers, including the Gender Studies Center, which focuses on research and education about gender equality; the Lifelong Learning Center, which supports opportunities for learning to develop the skills and abilities of vulnerable groups in the long term; the Labor and International Migration Services Center, which helps vulnerable workers access labor rights and career development opportunities; and the Isan Community Studies Center, which works on studying and developing strategies to strengthen local communities in the Isan region.

In addition, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has been conducting research aimed at supporting and promoting the vulnerable groups to live better in society. The focus is on developing knowledge that addresses current social issues and creates sustainable solutions, ensuring that vulnerable groups can access resources and opportunities equally in society.

Khon Kaen University has been integrating collaboration with partner networks to continuously drive various projects in order to elevate the economy and society of the northeastern region. In particular, the university has worked with agencies under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, operating within an academic cooperation framework to systematically and sustainably improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups in Thai society.

The goal of this discussion is to encourage all parties to coordinate and collaborate in developing mechanisms to support vulnerable groups more effectively. Proposals from the academic sector, particularly Khon Kaen University, are considered a key factor in driving practical policies to produce tangible outcomes.
