Khon Kaen University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Hosts Academic Seminar on High-Speed Rail Impacts Across China, Laos, and Thailand, Advancing International Research Collaboration
On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University, participated in the academic seminar titled "Connecting Borders, Connecting People: High-Speed Rail and its Impacts in China, Laos, and Thailand." The event was held at the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Bangkok Menam Riverside, Bangkok.
Associate Professor Dr. Orathai Piayura, Dean of the Faculty, graciously delivered the opening address. Associate Professor Dr. Thanapauge Chamaratana, Head of the Department of Social Sciences and Project Director, presented the project report to the chairperson. The morning session included a keynote address on "Spatial Development: Opportunities from High-Speed Rail," a project introduction video presentation, an exhibition showcasing research findings from the three regions (China, Laos, Thailand) and key observations, followed by research presentations by researchers from the three countries. Representing the Thai research team, Dr. Panu Suppatkul, Lecturer in Social Sciences, presented the research findings. The afternoon session focused on a review of the Phase 1 research outcomes and a planning meeting for Phase 2.
This academic seminar is a collaborative effort among three institutions: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Khon Kaen University; the National University of Laos; and Yunnan Minzu University, China. The project focuses on the impact of the China-Laos-Thailand High-Speed Rail within the framework of the "Belt and Road Initiative," specifically addressing the dimensions of social cooperation and people's livelihoods. This project, titled "Impact of China-Laos-Thai High-Speed Train on 'One Belt One Road Strategy' in Dimension of Social Cooperation and People Livelihood," is supported by the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund (LMCSF) 2023. The first phase (Year 1) of the research, which focused on the impact of the trilateral high-speed rail project on the livelihoods of people along the railway route in China, Laos, and Thailand, has been completed. This seminar was organized to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas, and to discuss the direction for the second phase of the research.
