KKU’s HUSO English Corner Aims to Create a Safe Space for English Learning
English Corner, a project at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Khon Kaen University, intends to enhance the English skills of students within the faculty. The project, headed by lecturer Vanessa Moll, was introduced for students who wish to gain confidence and develop their English skills beyond the classroom. Students are invited to close their textbooks and join English Corner activities, such as English Hour, held weekly throughout the semester on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 16.00 on. Each English Hour brings a new topic of discussion or shared activity. Students may discuss what is on their minds, such as social movements or current events, talk about what they have been doing on their days off, or exchange opinions based on a movie they have watched together. During other English Hours, students relax through playing board games, making food, or engaging in cultural exchange with international guests. Important holidays, such as Valentine’s Day and Christmas, are marked with their own special events. Aside from English Hour, other language skill development activities may include singing contests and dining with international exchange students. Such activities have encouraged participants with their English language learning, as they are not only given the opportunity to apply their listening, speaking, thinking, and analyzing skills, but they are also challenged to use English to communicate throughout.
In addition to these onsite activities, English Corner has also opened online channels for students interested in following content for knowledge and news updates. Students can like the Facebook page ‘HUSO English Corner’ for news updates about English Corner’s latest or upcoming activities and can follow @husoenglishcorner on TikTok to learn English using the latest popular social media trends. You can get a taste of the mood and atmosphere during English Corner activities, which are captured and shared on these channels. English Corner aims to provide students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with a safe space for developing their English skills, exposing them to the language, helping them to face their fears about speaking it, and developing their capacity to communicate with native English speakers in the real world.
